DAZED & CONFUSED…

Question marks above a man’s head
Question marks above a man’s head

With less than a month until Biden’s Inauguration, I ask myself, “When else has our country been so divided?”  You have to admit, these are strange times… I mean really, you would probably have to go back to 1861, the start of the Civil War, to find a similar divide.  I find myself trying to understand this division while our current president does not know how to deal with realities that face our country. I do not know why the most powerful person in the world creates his own realities by convincing half our country that his lies are truths. I try to understand why 70 million Americans could have ignored a person’s lack of morality, ethics & character, and a Republican Party that supports such deception. I find myself dazed and confused!

POLITICS

In my youth I was more of a progressive with a very liberal view, but through the years I have moved more into the middle… I am not sure why, but now I see myself more of a liberal-leaning moderate.  I think I am more in the middle because it’s the most practical. It’s a place where more can be accomplished as the compromises won’t be as great… plus, I don’t want to be so extreme in my views that nothing can get done. I have voted Republican when it made sense, like when I supported two of our Republican governors, Mitt Romney and Charlie Baker (both moderates).  Unfortunately, I don’t understand the majority of the GOP views anymore… I feel this is not the old Republican Party… it’s one I just don’t recognize.

TRYING TO FIND ANSWERS

I truly try to understand and find answers to how this happened. There is so much anger and frustration out there and I see it every day. I have tried to find answers with my passengers and most seem to agree with me, while the ones who support the president cannot really tell me why.

I know we all have different opinions and I try to respect that, as this is what our country is all about.  I would love to see our country get back to fighting for common good that we are united behind. I want to see us get back on track and get things done… but we need to be able to work together.  When I look for bipartisan leadership, I want leadership that:

  • Supports our allies, not dictatorships…
  • Keeps the U.S. engaged, not isolated, in the world community…
  • Promotes unity, not disruption and division…
  • Fights against racism & white supremacy…
  • Moves us away from fossil fuels and acknowledges climate change…
  • Refuses to bully anyone who may have a different view…
  • Appoints qualified people for key roles in our government…
  • Works to solve major issues facing our nation…
  • Understands that our country is great because of, not in spite of, our diversity & immigrant history…
  • Can deal with the realities of an election.
  • Shows total respect for women…
  • Has no sexual harassment charges…
  • Refuses to create conflicts & problems for a new incoming President…
  • Would never try to destroy democracy for self-interests…
  • Shows compassion & understanding for those that are hurting…
  • Respects & honors our military…

NO-BRAINERS

These seem like no-brainers. These are common-sense unwritten rules for bi-partisan leadership. I am not sure what happened these last four years, but it is quite upsetting and unsettling for so many people who truly care about our constitution and democracy. The more I focus on this I start to think that I’m not the only one that is “dazed & confused!”

NOTE:

Please note this posting was written before today’s upsetting actions from Trump demonstrators storming and seizing our nation’s Capital building in Washington, D.C..  My posting stands as written. We are better then this… Need I say more?
