A Dillema Indeed
What would you do if you were heading to the airport, and your boss called to tell you that he is laying off 250 people and your company may face bankruptcy?

I picked Scott up at the airport as he was returning from a NYC business trip. He immediately noticed my signage offering several communication options for the ride and struck up a conversation. Scott wanted to know what my blog was about. I mentioned that I try writing about the city, conversations and passengers who inspire me.  He seemed to appreciate my perspective on life: simple living and appreciation. He said he too had lot of gratitude for life.

After saying the magic word, gratitude, I gave him one of my gratitude coins and said to Scott, “I get the feeling there is a story behind your gratitude?”

Scott’s Story
Yes, there was a story, which leads me back to my opening paragraph. Years ago, this was exactly the situation that Scott found himself in. He was working in the high stakes world of finance, at a very high level. Scott was chasing the money tree, overworked, overstressed and out of touch with life’s balance of work and family life.

When Scott’s boss announced the layoffs and potential bankruptcy, it was like a light was turned on in his thinking, and he instantly decided to make a change… Scott cancelled his flight and returned home, as he just wasn’t up for laying off 250 people.  Little did Scott know at the time, but this decision saved his life and would reset his priorities.  You see,the flight Scott cancelled was flight 11 and the day was September 11, 2001.  It would only be a few hours later that flight 11 was forced to crash into the North Tower at the World Trade Center!   I was amazed and could not believe what Scott was telling me… all I could say was “WOW” (pretty expressive, huh?).

Gratitude
It certainly makes a lot of sense that Scott feels so much gratitude for the second chance he got to set his priorities straight.  He has now found that balance in life in a less demanding job, and perhaps the financial wealth he stopped chasing made more room in his life for gaining a different kind of wealth: his family, his health and his time!  On several levels, Scott is now considered a very rich man… wealthy in all things that truly matter!  SO, how would an event like this change your life… or if a change is needed, why wait for a life-altering moment?   Just askin’  🙂
