Workin’ Towards A More Meaningful Change

Have you ever observed commuters heading to work? Sitting on the “T”, commuter rail, the back of an Uber, waiting at the bus stop or walking through the Financial District, it doesn’t really matter…all I see is a look of seriousness, concern or a deepness in thought.  I pick up so many young professionals working in the the District… many just seem unhappy. I wonder about their decisions, what is it they like most about this field… most seem to like the money but, that is about it, crunching numbers, or advising on making money… I don’t get a feeling of satisfaction or making a difference. I may be generalizing but, it is my observation.

I picked up James in front of a nondescript industrial type building in Waltham.  He got in, smiled after reading my sign in the back offering many services for conversation. He asks, you offer life coaching? Of course I reply, but I am not licensed, only honest feedback is offered.., what’s your issue I ask?

James thought for a hard second, then replied… I was just working with an owner of a company doing about $15 million a year and he wanted to assign a third of the company to his son.  I am just so tired of helping the rich get richer!  We talked a bit about his career, James worked for a Big 4 accounting firm, then tired of just being a small player in a large company (20,000+) he moved on to a smaller company (where he is now) of about 500.  James explained his frustrations and how he is looking for more satisfaction.  He actually would  like to have more of an impact with what he is doing.  I mentioned to James he always has options and suggested he look to working in a company where he would be the financial expert for that company (not a financial company where everyone is doing the same thing) or perhaps working for a non-profit or a financial company that specializes in helping non-profits or smaller struggling companies.  All these alternatives offer options that would provide much more satisfaction.  James totally agreed, and said yes, it’s not always about just making money!!!!

He opened his door to get out, said thanks for opening his eyes to the possibilities… and had a huge smile on his face, AND so did I!!!!
